Calls for Investment in Research 2019-20

Aligned to the University’s Corporate Plan and International Research Strategy, these investment and funding schemes provide an opportunity for CU researchers to undertake transformative, cross-disciplinary, cross-national, and cross-sector research. The calls are aligned to the University’s Research Strategy, the Global Challenges Research Fund, the Industrial Strategy, Stern and Dowling Reviews, and UK Research and Innovation’s Strategic Prospectus.

The schemes are intended to support researchers at different career stages to develop their research practice, to work together as teams, and to enhance the wider research culture at Coventry University.

Please ensure you read the guidance for each scheme carefully and consult with your Centre Director before developing an application. In advance of the deadline, sessions on writing high quality funding applications and effective business cases will be run by the Centre for Research Capability and Development. Trailblazers: The Early-Career Researcher and Doctoral Studentship Partnering Scheme

This scheme provides an opportunity for talented early-career researchers (ECRs) to lead a supervisory team and develop a doctoral project. The scheme seeks to support early-career researchers to undertake trailblazing, transformative research with exceptional doctoral candidates that will shape the fields in which they work.

The doctoral project must be devised and developed by the early-career researchers (supported by the experienced supervisor) and connect to the ECR’s wider programme of research and development as an independent researcher. The anticipated intake date is Sept 2020.

Early Career Researcher Networking and Skills Development

This scheme enables early career researchers at Coventry University to spend time with a mentor in a research group OR external organisation to support skills development, networking, and the development of future partnerships with external organisations. A proportion of funding for this scheme will be ring-fenced for activities that partner with institutions or organisations located in: Australia, China, India, USA, and South Africa.

Costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence can be requested, together with the time of an external mentor. The maximum award for a single applicant is £4,000. For team-based applications, the maximum award is £10,000. The average value of individual awards is expected to be lower. All activities must be completed by 31st July 2020.

International and Interdisciplinary Pilot Projects

The scheme supports the development high-risk and experimental interdisciplinary and/or international research projects. Interdisciplinary projects will need to involve researchers from distinct disciplines. International projects will need to involve a partner institution from Australia, China, India, South Africa, or the USA. Projects that are both interdisciplinary and international are also welcome.

All projects must involve doctoral and/or early-career researchers.

Costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence can be applied for, together with direct project costs (such as consumables and equipment, research or administrative assistance, and events and activities). The maximum award is up to £12,000. The average value of individual awards is expected to be lower. All activities must be completed by 31st July 2020.

Public Engagement with Research: Events and Activities Fund

This scheme will support teams of doctoral, early and middle career researchers to undertake transformational public engagement projects. The aim of the call is to enable researchers to test out new ways of communicating research through innovative engagement activities and events.

If a doctoral researcher is leading the project, they must be mentored by a senior researcher.

Costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence can be applied for, together with directs costs (such as consumables, materials, and equipment, administrative or evaluative assistance, and events, promotion, and activities). The maximum award is up to £5,000. All activities must be completed by 31st July 2020.
