Coventry University Staff Doctorate Fund 2020 (SDF2020) – Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development

The Doctoral College & Centre for Research Capability and Development are managing the Staff Doctorate Fund for 2020 (SDF2020) to support the University’s strategic objectives in academic capability and performance and to support members of staff who wish to undertake a doctoral degree at Coventry University.

The doctoral programmes supported by this SDF2020 call for applications are: the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) and the PhD in Global Education.

Who can apply?

SDF2020 is open to Coventry University Group professional services and academic staff:

who are making a new application to the doctoral programmes in the Fund and
who fulfill the Coventry University standard entry requirements for Research Degrees and any programme specific entry requirements and
who submit a complete, eligible application by the notified deadline.

What will be funded?

SDF2020 will cover tuition fees and up to one day a week to the staff member’s cost centre to cover back fill for one day a week. It is presumed that the staff area will cover a further day a week and for academic staff, it is assumed that this time is already allocated for scholarly activity.

SDF2020 will cover the cost of economy flights and accommodation of overseas staff who need to attend Coventry based sessions and modules that are mandatory to their programme.

Applicants should note that the SDF2020 funding is limited and offers of places will be prioritised based on academic scrutiny of the the calibre of the applicant and their suitability to undertake the doctoral programme.

DBA

To be considered for a September enrolment applications need to be submitted by 31 August 2020. Enrolment is planned for September 2020 and is dependent on whether the number of accepted applicants constitutes a viable cohort.

Doctorate in Business Administration

Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA)

The DBA programme is cohort-based, with groups of up to 10 candidates mentored throughout their research degree by an expert academic team. The degree takes 4 to 6 years to complete.

The DBA is designed for practising managers with the experience and roles to facilitate impactful change within their organisations as a result of their research.

Whilst the programme contains some taught elements designed to enhance research skills and capabilities, the final award of the Doctorate is based on a portfolio of original research, presented in a thesis.

PhD in Global Education

The PhD in Global Education has been developed for professionals working as educators in various settings around the world. It’s a programme for those who want to gain and use research skills in order to improve practice in their settings, from a background of understanding global educational issues.

The online PhD is a structured doctorate, which means it has key milestones. Throughout the programme you will learn more about yourself as a professional and how research can enhance your day to day work. The purpose, as with any doctorate, is to develop a substantial piece of original research, with a specific focus on research that has clear relevance to policy and/or practice. The main aim of the programme is to enable you to acquire advanced knowledge, and this knowledge will be related to a specialist field of study and applied within a professional context, in order to contribute to developing professional understanding and practice.

The programme aims to develop reflective, well-informed and competent researchers able to support professional colleagues and others undertaking research. Its key features are:

An approach which allows participants who may be working full-time in education to take advantage of a structured submission process, according to an agreed timetable, thus supporting timely submission;
A pathway with Masters modules to enable participants without a Masters to gain skills and confidence in research and clarity of focus;
An approach which allows for innovative assessment with the consent of the supervisory team;
Structured support workshops online as part of the Coventry Doctoral College research community

PhD by Publication

Coventry University’s new PhD by Publication programme is designed for active researchers who have already produced a number of publications but have not been awarded a PhD. This route differs from a ‘traditional’ PhD as it allows you to use existing publications to form a research portfolio.

The PhD by Publication route offers two pathways:

Candidates who have a complete set of existing outputs from previous research will be enrolled on a two-year pathway. You will receive supervision to identify the outputs for your portfolio and complete the PhD submission process.
Candidates who have a small amount of existing outputs from previous research will be enrolled on a three-year pathway, where you will work with a supervisor to undertake further scholarly or practice-based work and/or produce further outputs before submission.

How do I apply for the DBA?

1. Check that you meet the Coventry University standard entry requirements for Research Degrees.

3. Commence your application on the Postgraduate Research Admissions platform PGR+ using the specific programme link:

Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) – September 2020 enrolment

4. Gather all of the standard supporting documentation e.g. degree transcripts, references that you are required to submit with your application at the earliest opportunity.

5. Seek approval from your line manager and Head of School/Director of Professional Services and ask them to complete the Staff Doctorate Programme Line Management Approval Form. This form should be uploaded to PGR+ as part of the application. Applications without this approval will be ineligible.

6. Submit a complete application by 31 August 2020 to be considered for a September 2020 enrolment.
