“Understanding travel risk in research” – Research Ethics and Integrity Series 2023

Speakers; Karen Lawrence, Group Head of Health and Safety Coventry University & Dr Laura Payne, Research Fellow in the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University.

Session Outline; In this session we will discuss how to manage the risks related to travel for fieldwork, exploring those factors which make travel ‘high risk’ and how to mitigate the risks to ensure successful outcomes from fieldwork. Finally we will outline how the University’s procedures for the approval of high risk travel and the arrangements in place to support researchers whilst travelling.

Speaker bios;

Karen Lawrence is the Group Head of Health and Safety for Coventry University Group. She is experienced in supporting researchers to assess and mitigate risks associated with fieldwork in more challenging and unstable contexts, and is responsible for the University’s travel safety procedures.

Laura Payne is the Department Ethics Lead for the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, supporting researchers to navigate the Group’s ethics process and ensure high ethical standards within their research. In her own research she regularly visits conflict-affected areas seen as high risk, and has adapted a range of strategies to ethically manage risks for researchers and research partners.
