Transitions: Early Career Researcher to Principal Investigator

When: This course consists of the following activities

  1. Introductory Webinar on 16 February @ 2:00pm – 4:00pm
  2. Individual preparatory work in Aula between that will set you up for the face-to-face session and for effective preparation of your Development Plan
  3. Face to face session at Kestrel Room, Elm Bank on 6 March @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.

The main purpose of Transitions is to equip ECRs with the knowledge and awareness to create and follow their individualised development plans. The course is highly interactive and provides a good start for creating your own strategy towards establishing research independence and becoming a PI. It will help you to identify the knowledge, skills and experience that will aid progression in your academic career; assess your current reality; set goals and plan for your future development. You will have the opportunity to connect with senior researchers and learn from their experiences of becoming a PI.

The learning objectives of Transitions are:

  • Develop a reflective practice
  • Assess current reality and gain awareness of own motivations and goals
  • Create a professional and personal development plan draft
  • Identifying knowledge, skills and experience to aid progression in Academic Career

The course is highly interactive and provides a good start for creating your specific strategy towards establishing research independence and becoming principal investigators. The outcome will be your individualised action plan.

Individual 1-to-1 support will be offered as an optional follow up to give you additional support on your development journey.

The course is facilitated by Dr Tanvir Ahmed from the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development (RECAP)

Refreshments: On 6 March we will provide you with a ‘brown bag’ lunch which includes a sandwich, drink & snack. Please email RECAP@coventry.ac.uk if you have any specific dietary requirements. We also provide hot drinks throughout the day: tea, herbal teas, coffee and water. Lactose-free milk, decaffeinated drinks, hot chocolate etc. usually available on request (don’t be shy in asking!).

Venue: The Kestrel workshop room at Elm Bank is on the ground floor. There are accessible toilets on the ground and first floors. There is a Multi-faith (prayer) room on the ground floor.

Parking

Materials: we are happy to provide handouts and resources in your preferred format (e.g. font, paper colour). All requests are treated in strict confidence.
