Introducing Gender Analysis and Situated Knowing

Monday 23 Jan 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

This online workshop will be delivered by Professor Suzanne Clisby, Research Centre for Global Learning

In this workshop you will be introduced to some concepts and techniques that we use in gender analysis training. This introduction to gender analysis should help you to think about how you can then apply these tools to develop your gendered consciousness, become enhanced ‘situated knowers’ and bring a gender analysis to your personal lives, working practices, and as a set of tools that could support and inform your research approach.

Gender analysis is a system for examining the differences in roles, norms and stereotypes in a given social context that can affect how people experience the worlds we inhabit. Through gender analysis we can think about the different levels of power we hold; our differing needs, constraints, and opportunities; and the impact of these differences on our lives. We can also apply this way of seeing and thinking in our approach to research methods and working with research participants.

As such, this workshop will introduce you to the concepts and techniques of gender analysis to help you think reflectively about your gendered social contexts, to think about how and why your individual identity affects what you do and your relationships with others throughout your lifecourse.  This training is just a starting point, but the exercises you will be introduced to should provide you with some useful tools to take away and play around with in the future.
