Ethics in arts-based research: just “nice to have”? – Research Ethics and Integrity Series 2023

Speaker: Professor Damian Sutton, Coventry University

Summary of session: This session will provide an overview of some of the key issues faced by arts-based and practice researchers within the context of institutional ethics and governance, as well as wider debates around consent and responsibility related to data collection and participant encounters.

Bio of speaker: Damian Sutton is Professor of Photography Theory and Culture and has been Faculty Ethics Lead in Arts and Humanities since 2018. He did a foundation at Winchester School of Art, before doing Visual Arts and Media at Leicester Polytechnic, MA Film (Southampton) and his doctorate (Glasgow) in film and photography theory. He taught at The Glasgow School of Art for ten years and is the former director of the Art and Design Research Institute at Middlesex University. He has supervised practice research doctoral students since 2006. He is currently writing about ethical deficit, biography, and historical portraits.
