Advancing Research and Innovation at Coventry: Calls for Investment

Aligned to the University’s Corporate Plan and International Research Strategy, these  investment and funding schemes provide an opportunity for CU researcher to undertake transformative, cross-disciplinary, cross-national, and cross-sector research. The calls are aligne to the University’s Research Strategy, the Global Challenges Research Fund, the Industrial Strategy, Stern and Dowling Reviews, and UK Research and Innovation’s Strategic Prospectus.

The schemes are intended to support researchers at different career stages to develop their research practice, to work together as teams, and to enhance the wider research culture at Coventry University.

Please ensure you read the guidance for each scheme carefully and consult with your Centre Director before developing an application.

Trailblazers: The Early-Career Researcher and Doctoral Studentship Partnering Scheme

This scheme provides an opportunity for talented early-career researchers (ECRs) to lead a supervisory team and develop a doctoral project. The scheme seeks to support early-career researchers to undertake trailblazing, transformative research with exceptional doctoral candidates that will shape the fields in which they work.

The doctoral project must be devised and developed by the early-career researchers (supported by the experienced supervisor) and connect to the ECR’s wider programme of research and development as an independent researcher.

Early Career Researcher Networking and Skills Development (£7.5K)

This scheme enables early career researchers at Coventry University to spend time with a mentor in a research group OR external organisation to support skills development, networking, and the development of future partnerships. Up to £7,500 can be requested. The average value of individual awards is expected to be lower. All activities must be completed by 31st July 2019.

To support the development of ideas for this scheme, the Centre for Research Capability and Development is hosting a series of events on interdisciplinary and international research in June, including a sandpit with researchers from Deakin University (AUS).

Cross-Centre International and Interdisciplinary Pilot Projects (£10K)

The scheme supports the development of cross-institutional to undertake high-risk and experimental interdisciplinary and/or international research projects. Interdisciplinary projects will need to involve researchers from disparate disciplines and so should be cross-faculty and/or cross-URC. International projects will need to involve partner institutions from: Australia, China, India, USA, and South Africa. Projects that are both interdisciplinary and international are encouraged. Up to £10,000 can be requested. The average value of individual awards is expected to be lower. All activities must be completed by 31st July 2019.

Enterprise, Exchange, and Engagement Activities (£20K)

This scheme will support early and middle career researchers to develop strategic partnerships with industry, businesses, third-sector organisations, and community groups and/or to undertake transformational engagement projects. The aim of the call is to allow researchers to test out new ways of working and to develop new, sustainable partnerships through internships, residencies, micro-projects, and engagement activities and events. All proposals should actively involve doctoral and early-career researchers with their contributions outlined in the proposal. Up to £20,000 can be requested.

Research Equipment and Infrastructures (£30K)

The schemes supports the purchase of research equipment and the development of research infrastructures (including e-infrastructures) to support disciplinary, cross-disciplinary, and cross-institutional working. Costs for the infrastructure or equipment (including VAT), technical development (including technical staff costs), implementation, and maintenance for the first year can be included. Up to £30,000 can be requested.
