Research Methods Seminar: A novel technique to measure the usage of web-based information

Thursday 15 Dec 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

We are pleased to announce a webinar by Dr Tariq S. Almontaser, Faculty of Business and Law, Coventry University

Abstract:

The current literature of estimating web traffic is based on retrieving data from popular directories, such as Alexa, Compete, or SimilarWeb. In other words, many popular websites (web-directories) provide their users with such data. However, some provide it only for website owners (e.g., Google Analytics) or provide chargeable web traffic data for only home pages (e.g., Alexa, SimilarWeb), or make the data available only for global companies (e.g., Compete).

The engagement of stakeholders with web-based contents is crucial for improving firms’ communication to them. Measuring web traffic is the most accurate indicator for such communication. In this paper, the novel method determines commensurably the usage of web-based contents using publicly available source of data. The adopted data source freely serves range of users with data equivalents, as I argue in this paper, to web traffic data related to millions of websites worldwide. This data source has never been used for this purpose. The outputs of the method have been verified using real data of different websites. The verification tests provide high level of accuracy of the estimated usage of web-based information. The outputs of the introduced method have been successfully used to estimate the longitudinal changes in stakeholders’ engagement with web-based information.

The potential clients of the outputs of the introduced method are companies/investors from different sectors, research centres, consultants and students who are interested in studying any phenomena based on web-based data. However, the potential clients may (or may not) be the end user of produced data. Clients can request data about their competitors/customers. The final products of this platform could be raw numerical statistics about stakeholders’ engagement of company (or group of companies); or it could be analytical data based on specific query (customized).
