Deconstructing (Un)conscious bias
Thursday 3 Nov 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
FreeThis in-person workshop will be delivered by Steve Raven, Research Centre for Global Learning
The workshop challenges the notion of ‘unconscious bias’ in seeking practical approaches to ensure interactions with colleagues, students, and research participants are inclusive interactions. The session addresses the issue of marginalising others in the process of socially interacting with them. It also examines the outcomes of (un)conscious bias from the perspective of those who experience its marginalising impact and those by definition who are unaware of its operation.
The workshop rationale: It appears and noted by research, we all tend to believe in our own egalitarian qualities, but in reality, how much do we operate when socially interacting do we maximise our capacity to be inclusive? Using counter-story narratives constructed from case studies, the key message from the session is the use of self-reflexivity as a tool to reduce the impact of marginalising others.
The session is intended to be an informal, collegiate and productive open discussion with a workshop learning approach intended to contribute to the professional development of all research-associated staff irrespective of familiarity with equality, diversity and inclusion policies.
